Disc Golf in New Zealand

2011 Gisborne First Light

Bob Clark Memorial Disc Golf Tournament..

Alfred Cox Park. Gisborne October 15 & 16. PDGA C Tier.
NZDG Tour event number 10 .. TD Bob Gentil .. 021 922 097

Disc Golf New Zealand
Tropical Wonderland - looking like a seasoned golfer, rookie Jill Sullivan (Levin) fires a shot straight at the 14th pin, situated amongst the beautiful palms that are so prevalent in Gisborne's sunny East Coast. The only thing missing was a drinks cart serving cocktails (a request has been lodged with the 2012 TD - ed.)

Many of the regular participants of the New Zealand Disc Golf Tour will agree that it provides the best opportunity for golfers to test themselves against different courses and against other athletes. But it also offers a great excuse to travel and see this beautiful country, meeting fine people from each location along the way. And one of the best ways to take in the sights is via car - the great New Zealand Road Trip.

The 2011 First Light Gisborne Disc Golf tournament offered such an opportunity to two groups of golfers from opposite ends of the North Island.

Firstly there travelled a group of family and friends from the West Coast city of Levin, a trip of over 400km across the width of the island. Now famous for their enthusiasm for the game, the Sullivan clan et al are almost a certainty at any NZ Tour event. This time saw a troup of six making the journey - one noticeable ommision being the handsome Jacko who was left to ensure that someone's wedding went well fed. And so the crew did the right thing and hired a people wagon to take all six in one. Up the island they travelled south of the Ruahine Ranges until passing through the coastal town of Napier before climbing past the beautiful Lake Tutira until 6 hours later arrving in Gisborne.

From north came the Beema cruise wagon containing the Grand Master himself and TD Bob Gentil accompanied by Mexican Juan Unda and no golfing old friend Kim Taihuka, visiting his whanau of his home town. The lads took their time on the Friday for the 500km trip, stopping to take in the likes of Waihi, Opotoki and Ohope before enjoying the spectacular Waioeka Gorge which was especially stunning with some spring-time rains leading to an abundance of waterfalls on every turn.

As the Aucklanders arrived at the Alfred Cox Disc Golf to mark out the A tees, the Levinites were already getting a feel for the course in the evening sunshine. Gisborne has a well earned reputation in New Zealand for its fine weather, recording yearly sunshine hours that are surpassed by only a few other Kiwi towns, and it's Pacific Ocean surf.

By the players meeting at 10am Saturday, the travellers were well rested and fed and ready to go along with local players Rangi Harrison and his son Taran.

This was the second NZ Tour event in Gisborne, celebrating one of the few full 18 basket courses in the country. Bob shared a little history about the course and paid tribute to the late Bob Clark for whom the tournament is named after. Bob C was instrumental in completing the course, donating several baskets himself as well as installing them. Like so many sports, disc golf relies on the efforts of keen people like both Bobs to grow that sport, especially when it comes to creating the physical opportunites for others to enjoy it.

err..still going!

The Pictures

Disc Golf New Zealand
2450m Par 26 - Always looking for his next course design project, Gisborne course designer Bob Gentil (Fairyland) tries out the signature hole of his proposed (or is that preposterous) course at Waihi's Martha Mine.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Disc Golf Gisborne - Levin Disc Diva Gemma Sullivan tees of by the sign denoting the disc golf course at Alfred Cox Park. What a great asset for a great town (Gemma for Levin, the disc golf course for Gisborne that is!).

Disc Golf New Zealand
Water Hazard - The Wiakanae River runs alongside the entire length of the course, making for some buttock-clenching moments with rollers and wayward throws. And for a very picturesque walk in the park.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Great Course - Well marked out, you can play this wonderful course any time of the week. All you need is a frisbee!

Disc Golf New Zealand
Kapati Kruiser - the bulk of the field was from Levin (and we don't just mean Shano - there were 6 entrants from this disc golfing mecca) and what better way to do the road trip than all together in an eight seater sponsored by the new disc on the scene, the U-Drive.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Road Trip - any disc golfing road trips is fun, but taking in the sights and scenes of New Zealand's rugged East Cape is especially spectacular.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Totally Bent - no, the basket silly! Looks like the machinery laying out some new turf got a little close to the basket of Hole 2. But it still happily accepted discs as evidenced by the kaching action of Gemma's disc.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Red Demon - One of only two discs used by Mexican bandit Juan Unda was the Red Demon putter. TD Bob Gentil was asked several times to check the disc to see if he could unravel the disc's uncanny ability to find the chains despite the Mexican's seeming lack of skill.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Mad - not only did Mexican Juan Unda play with just 2 frisbees, but he played all 4 rounds played sans footwear. They build them tough in Central America.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Warm Up - players warmed up their throwing arms with a casual chuck on the beach in front of the Beachcomber. Top contender Lawton Willaims (Levin) hurls up to 2 of the mighty men of New Zealand Disc Golf, Shane Sullivan (Levin, left) and Bob 'GM' Gentil (Birhenhead, right).

Disc Golf New Zealand
Players Meeting - Under the Gisborne sun and the gaze of the totem pole (gifted to Gisborne by Canada), TD Bob Gentil runs through the day's aganda whilst sharing a bit of history behind the course and those that made in happen.

Disc Golf New Zealand
All the Best - Levin Style - Instead of the formal pre-round handshake (or American bum slap), Kiwi golfers are rapidly adopting Levin's Brotherhood Disc Golf starting salutaions with the 'Knuckle Tap'. Getting a good plastic-to-plastic !smack! will lead to a great round for both players.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Flexible Femme - This shot captures the contortions that a disc golfer can acheive when throwing their disc. Paula Wilson (Levin) fires her opening shot straight towards the basket on hole 1.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Cross Country - Hole 3 continues the run of river-side holes and great pin placements. Here Abe Hartley (Levin) tried to curve into the well protected green to give himself an easy birdie 2.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Under Way - Lawton 'Lawty' Williams (Levin) tees off on hole one for the first round. Lawty was to gauge this an indifferent round, unable to steal a single birdie. Possibly due in part to a bit of early spring hayfever that affected a few of the players.

Disc Golf New Zealand
3 Stripe Hype - Many of the holes may be labeled short in distance, but Bob Gentil's course design has made for a wonderful balance of distance and trickiness to make for a course that will keep beginners and experienced players alike happy for many a round. Here AB keeps it low to avoid the 'overhangover' of the disc being caught early by a branch.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Leaning Into It - Great technique is always shown by Levin golfer Lawton Williams, making sure to stay low to avoid the trees protecting the basket on hole 6.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Low Rider - Like many of the Westside holes that hug the river, great pin placement calls for a very controlled drive. Rangi Harrison (Gisborne) knows this better than most, being the course 'pro' and playing regularly at this, his local course.

Disc Golf New Zealand
The Ace Race - Hole 11 was the main hole that had players thinking about the Ace Kitty, especially with the memories fresh of Doctor Proctor's Ace in the 2010 tournament on this very hole. It was not to be, however, and the Ace Kitty stays alive for the next tournament.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Local Support - Rugby fever is everywhere in New Zealand as the country's team - the All Blacks - attempts to take out the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Here, on the weekend of the All Black's crucial semi-final against Australia, local golfer Rangi Harrison (Gisborne) shows his support for the team.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Technician Technique - Relative rookie to the game and leading dental technician, Paula Wilson (Foxton) shows great putting style on the 13th. What the pictures do not show is the tough cross wind that made these types of putts a reason to hold your breath. Speaking of breath, Wilson did well to better her score Saturday afternoon despite the lengthened tees and the tragic loss of her toothbrush which she carries with her on every round.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Gem of a Shot - At the halfway point, Gemma Sullivan (Levin) has her confident putting style in full swing as she continued to make those tough 10m putts look easy. Especially when you consider there was quite a breeze for the weekend.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Another Slammer - Just back from the Mexican Open, Juan Unda (Tijuana) was getting putts from all angles. As - as we all know - good putting makes for a good round. Unda's consistent 52, 52, 51, 50 showed that the form never left him for long, despite a slight case of food poisoning (non-local cuisine we must add).

Disc Golf New Zealand
Lucky Lady - Yes, it is true - the disc of Foxton golfer Paula Wilson did actually end up tettering on the curve of this stormwater pipe. And so, with a bit of balance and courage, she completed the hole without penalty. Nice one!

Disc Golf New Zealand
Cross Over - As the course follows a true 'in and out' layout, golfers get to enjoy watching other groups tee off just metres away. As Gemma Sullivan (Levin) psyches up for the lengthy 12th, GM Bob Gentil (North Shore) performs his trademark grimmace drive on the 6th.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Sporty Spice - Kitted out in full disc golfer regalia, Lawton Williams (Levin) drives the first.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Sully Flick - Leading contender Shane Sullivan (Levin) shows his post-release disc control technique on hole 11. "Flatten, flatten!!!"

Disc Golf New Zealand
Rookie of the Day - Helping boost player numbers was Levin Disc Golf legend Jill Sillivan. Jill is a regular on the scene, but never as a player. She has always been there supporting the family and friend that make up the Brotherhood Disc Golf Tribe from that region. Obviously Jill had been taking it all in, as her first go at disc golf proved very successful, impressing fellow golfers on just about every hole. Well done Jill!

Disc Golf New Zealand
A Lawton Himself - More great technique from L Williams (Levin)

Disc Golf New Zealand
Industrious Golfer - Under the shadow of a mighty Oak Tree, Gemma Sullivan (Levin) takes on hole 13. The TD's naming of this hole ("Can't be hard") was playing on many golfers' minds as they considered the tough cross winds, bunkers, river at the back and wondered what the TD was drinking at the time.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Tropical Teen - Here on hole 16, local golfer Taran Harrison (Gisborne) impressed all with his powerful drives. And this is a lad of just 10 years of age - look out Feasey!

Disc Golf New Zealand
Almost There - Upon returning to the south end of the park, top female golfer Gemma Sullivan (Levin) drives hole 18 watched on by local Rangi Harrison (Gisborne), Grand Master Bob Gentil (Kauri Point) and Abe Hartley (Levin).
