Waiheke - First Event of the 2008 Calendar

New Zealand Disc GolfPlaying competitive disc golf surrounded by Vineyards!

This is what the players enjoyed at the first tournament of the 2008 New Zealand Disc Golf Tour.

Set in sunny Waiheke Island in Auckland's Waitemata Harbour, locals were treated to some superb disc golf, especially as competitors struggled with windy conditions on the final day.

We have the results, pictures and a brief account of the action courtesy of TC Brett Hailstone.

The 2008 Crater Cup

Disc Golf New ZealandFor the first time ever the second day’s play got blown off Maungakiekie as a fierce cold southerly and driving rain saw the baskets come in early.

But Saturday was beautiful as One Tree Hill Freaky Styliest Marty de Haas explains.

The 2008 Sydney Disc Golf Open

Disc Golf New ZealandBob had often thought about popping across the Tasman for a spot of Disc Golf -he used to do it regularly back in the 70’s and 80’s.

Sometimes as many as 7 or 8 kiwi golfers would fly across the ditch to take on the locals and pillage the prizes on offer.

Bob subscribes to the Australian Disc Golf Email list so when an invitation came to play in the ‘Sydney Disc Golf Open’, he couldn’t resist, and what a fantastic weekend it turned out to be!

The ‘2008 Christchurch Fling’

Disc Golf New ZealandAfter a long time in the Disc Golf wilderness it was great to head back to the Garden City for round 8 of the 2008 NZDG Tour. And to see Roobie on the Tour!

The weekend before there was snow on the Port Hills as the temperature dropped to freezing but for the weekend of the ‘Fling’ the weather gods were on our side.

Joint TD Pete Crowther tells the story.

Kiwis at the 2008 Worlds!

Disc Golf NZ
Ming and Pete in action at Tauranga, New Zealand.

The 2008 PDGA World Championships are all over in Kalamazoo and our Kiwi contingent have done us proud. Two of our 5 made the Top 4 Grand Finals on the Saturday!

Tauranga's Fiona 'Ming' Menzies has pulled off a stunning result coming 2nd in the Am Woman's Grand Masters (and putting the word on notice she'll be back for gold!)
The Lost Tribe's Pete Boyle gave the top Am Men's Grand Masters a shake up as well tying for 3rd and only 10 shots off the winner. (You know he'll be back, and then play basketball afterwards!)
Blair Joines from the Lost Tribe Club in Taumarunui scored a creditable equal 93rd playing in the huge Advanced Am's field of 286.
Kalamazoo based New Zealand Golfer Arthur Pengelly ended up 99th equal in the Advanced Am's  also and his Canadian born wife Dawn Pengelly (who learnt her DG skills on the courses of Taumarunui) placed 18th in the Woman's division.
Playing in the Pro Masters for the first time at Worlds Simon Feasey placed 36th equal with a tournament score of 28 under.

Congratulations on a fantastic result from us all at www.discgolf.co.nz

Taupo Classic - We were there!

Disc Golf New Zealand

I always count down the days till the Taupo Classic, I love playing disc golf in Spa Park, especially in spring, mind you I love playing Disc Golf!

As the weekend approached I had been watching the weather maps and had my fingers crossed the big ‘H’ coming across the Tasman would move a little slower and cover us for the weekend .. it got here a couple of days early so the weather in the lead up was all good, but luckily the condies for ‘the classic’ weren’t all bad.

After heading across the ditch for the Sydney Disc Golf Champs earlier in the year Bob was keen to return for the Oz Nationals, and this time convinced Jack Turner and Woody Inwood to join him. Jack was going to be in Brisbane the weekend before for mixed Ultimate and Woody was planning a business trip that tied in nicely.

The boys had a great time..
