What a fantastic park Monte Cecilia is for Disc Golf. Sadly with Auckland City’s ‘Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee’ about to turn it into “a place of discovery and encounters, with an arts focus”, this will probably be the last time we have an organised Disc Golf event there.
Mind you I reckon 18 baskets scattered through out the park classify as art! Maybe a few letters to the mayor and elected councillors [in election year] talking about the fantastic ‘basket art’ you saw over the weekend might have them seeing things our way. Especially if we point out that this sort of ‘art’ will encourage Aucklanders to get out and exercise, not to mention bring tourists to the city.
Anyway .. on with the story.
What a fantastic weekend of Disc Golf. Numerous new players, a high standard of play and even the weather came to the party with a beautiful sunny spring day on the Saturday and the only shower on Sunday coming over the lunch break. And on top of that the ACE kitty had hit a record $350.
Round 1 saw the Lost Tribes dominance come to the fore with Blair Joines sharing the lead with Waiheke’s Siep Van Vliet on 53 and Blair’s son Bruno [17] shooting a 55 along with the defending Open champ Steve Scarbrough from Albany. After a catered lunch [thanks Sheree] and the second seeded round Blair had taken the lead with a creditable 52, two up on Siep with Epsom’s David Keene’s 52 good enough to get him into the top group for the Sunday morning along with the GM tied for 4th with Steve Scarbrough. Barry Keene led the Masters by 1 over Nigel Hailstone and Ming Menzies from Tauranga was dominating the Woman’s division.
Sunday morning saw the heavy overnight rain disappear and the breeze stay from the south west, which meant once you got over the hill and down onto the course facing north east you were out of the wind. Mind you as my mate Serf says “the wind is your friend!”
The format for the Sunday was one more seeded round of 18 for everyone, lunch [thanks again Sheree] and a cut to a ‘Super 6’ shoot out for the top 6 contenders, so there was plenty to play for.
As the cards came in there was a bit of ooooing and arrrrring as the scores went up and the GM had shot a course record 49 [9 under] to wipe off his 5 shot deficit on Blair and in fact take a 2 shot lead heading into the ‘Super 6’ holes. They were joined by Siep Van Vliet, Steve Scarbrough, David Keene and Hamilton’s Josh Smith. But first there was the little matter if the Masters tied lead between Barry Keene and Nigel Hailstone to sort out. It took 5 of the Super 6 holes to find a winner, congratulations to Barry ‘Baz’ Keene who took home the Masters Trophy for 2007.
Hole 1 of the Safari ‘Super 6’ saw Blair take a birdie and cut the lead to 1, hole 2 and the result was reversed as the GM nailed an 8 metre putt to reinstate the 2 shot buffer. Good thing too as on the next hole the GM threw a shocker, snookering himself from the basket behind one of the giant Morton Bay Fig trees and Blair parked his drive, the GM’s lead was gone and first place was all tied up. It stayed that way until the final hole of the ‘Super 6’, the ‘Full Monte’ 221 metres from the elevated Tee in front of the old homestead straight down the middle. It must have been nerves as not one of the six pulled off a spectacular drive, disappointing the large gallery who were waiting to be impressed. Blair was to the left with 80 metres to the basket and the GM was down the middle but short by about 100 metres. The GM’s up shot was a big hyzer and went over the top of the basket and left him with a 9 metre putt, Blair’s was also a little on the strong side and looking to go a good 20 metres past the basket BUT collected a tree and dropped beside the basket for a gimme! [Rumour has it he took that tree out for dinner and drinks that evening!]
Well done to Blair for taking out the Open Title for 2007, the GM had to be happy with the Grand Masters trophy and the run he had at the big boys. Baz is the Auckland Masters Champ for 2007, Ming Menzies took the Woman’s trophy home for a second year, Robyn Joynt won the Junior Woman’s and Toby Gentil was chuffed to have his name on the Junior boy’s trophy for the second year as well.
Congratulations and thanks to all who came along to compete or just watch the second annual Auckland Disc Golf Champs, it was a wonderful weekend.
