Where was the screaming South Westerly, the freezing cold horizontal rain and the slippery wet conditions?
It just wasn’t right! Blue skies, very little wind and no rain as I headed to One Tree Hill for the ‘14th annual Freaky Styley Crater Cup’. Not that I was complaining, but I just can’t remember a Crater Cup weekend where you actually wanted to be on Maungakeikei.
It was a real delight to see 38 players signing up to take on the mountain. There were numerous faces I hadn’t seen before including a few Ultimate players taking on Disc Golf for the first time, and even enough ladies to make the Woman’s Competition honest.
I’d spent some time on the slopes with Marty de Haas and Simon as they’d developed the course over the previous few weeks, and was pleased that they’d come up with a layout that encouraged all levels of player. But mind you if you didn’t stick to the fairways there was still plenty of trouble to be had.
The random draw for round 1 saw a good mix of players heading to their respective tees for a shotgun start. The second round was seeded and the usual suspects found themselves on Tee #1.
By the end of the day the GM, Simon and Blair Joines had a share of the lead so going into the final round of 18 in the morning was going to be interesting. Who would it be that made the cut for the ‘Super 6’?
The format of three rounds with a cut to the top 6 for a ‘Super Six’ final 6 holes seems to be becoming part of the norm, with players who didn’t make the cut keen to follow the final group ooooooing and arrrrrring at the appropriate times!
Hole #1 of the ‘Super 6’ saw the GM make the only birdie, with Simon, Blair, Mark H and Josh Smith paring and Dean Marshall from Tauranga taking a double bogy 5.
Hole #2 and once again the gallery oooooed and arrrrrred as everyone smacked their drives into a tree in the middle of the fairway apart from the GM who gave himself a look at the basket but couldn’t cash.
Hole #3 and half the ‘Super 6’ saw their shots kick off the side of the bank and roll down the hill where getting back up wasn’t pretty.
Hole #4 of the ‘Super 6’ was down # 16 on the course proper and once again it wasn’t pretty golf. The GM going past the basket and down a level or two into a thickly wooded area with no shot out, not the sort of golf the crowd had come to see.
Hole #5 was hole 18 on the course proper and once again the ‘Super 6’ saw their drives sprayed all over the fairway, with no one having a clear shot at the basket.
Hole #6 of the ‘Super 6’ gave the group a chance to make up for their disappointing drives the first time, and this time most made it through the trees to the pin high terrace for a shot at the basket.
Another great weekend of Disc Golf and friendship on Maungakeikei, well done to those involved in putting the tournament together and congratulations to all who played this great event.
Blue Sky over One Tree Hill. It just didn’t seem right, heading to Maungakeikei on the morning of the opening round of the Freaky Styley Crater Cup and seeing sunshine and blue sky.
And there was Girls! Kirsty, Allie, Robin and Ming. I think we’re on the cusp of seeing this sport take off here in New Zealand. For the first time in recent history we had a genuine woman’s competition.

38 Players. It was heart warming to see players I haven’t seen before signing up for what is possibly the most testing disc golf event in the country. [Especially if the wind comes up and the horizontal rain happens.]
TD Feasey. Getting the fours together and off out onto the hill to battle the Crater Cup!

Team Freaky Styley was well represented, although it was noted that things just didn’t feel quite right with out our entertainments director Juan Unda, who’s on leave in the Memphis playing with the pros! And sadly no Wilde One, Snowie or Virgil, who were - as far as we knew it - in Auckland (they live there!)
Simon tees on hole #5. Saturday it took some skill in the relatively still conditions, but on the Sunday round it took no prisoners.
Pistol Pete and Fletcher kept popping up at different spots on the course. Here they appear at the top of hole # 12 with Mark H for a look down at Marty in the Crater.
|
Simon, Mark H and Dean play out hole #7. It was sad to see the damage the 500+ kilo cows had done to the side of the sacred hill as you walked the 7th fairway.
Happy to have 16 behind them. The Joynt sisters Robin and Allie with playing partner Kirsty.

Mark H Simon and Dean check their scores on the tee of the nasty par 3 16th.
Mark Hamilton surveys the scene. The Tee position on 18 was truly breathtaking as the players came in late Saturday. The Sky Tower and Auckland City in the back ground.
Dean from Tauranga sends one off the spectacular 16th tee with the iconic Rangitoto in the background. In fact pretty much every tee had a grandstand view over Auckland so by the time you’d circumnavigated the Hill, it was better than dinner at the revolving restaurant up Sky Tower.
Hole #3 caused some trouble. This was Marty’s ace hole from last year played from the other direction. Par was good this year!
The Top group on the Sunday morning play out hole # 1. Blair, Mark H, Simon, Seip and the Photographer.
The GM plays his second shot on 10 after being cut down by the tangle of wood work protecting the basket.
Where’s Marty? If you look real close you can see Marty de Haas playing his third shot on hole 13 after a climb to the bottom of the Crater.
|
Simon bends one around the corner on hole # 5. Land it flat on the fairway and you had a good chance at birdie, but if you got your angles wrong there was big trouble.
The Taumarunui Lost Tribe's Blair Joines tries to find a gap through the Pohutukawa protected hole # 10. Most were rejected!
All tangled up in ‘Jim’s Ravine’. Mark Hamilton parks his up-shot after his drive was a little less than ideal on the classic hole # 11.

Mark Hamilton .. [our featured player this tournament so it seems!]. It was hard not to get distracted by the view as you lined up your shot on the scary 16th.
Lunch ahead of the ‘Super 6’. Although the weather was fine we we’re only a few days off the Southern Hemispheres shortest day! The hot chocolates, hot dogs and pies went down a treat!
The Sunday afternoon ‘Super 6’. Blair Joines from Taumarunui, Mark Hamilton from Auckland, Simon Feasey from Western Springs, Dean Marshall from Tauranga, Josh Smith from Hamilton and the GM from Birkenhead.

The Freaky Styley Crater Cup Woman’s Trophy. After having been AWOL for the last 3 years Ming was keen to keep an eye on it over lunch.
The GM starts the ‘Super 6’ with a birdie. BUT just when he was thinking he was in with a chance, he bogied the next 4.
|
Josh Smith performs for the crowd. After scraping in to the ‘Super 6’ shoot out on the Sunday afternoon Josh decided he had nothing to loose and took a run at all six holes in the playoff.
Who’s ya Daddy? Pistol Pete introduces son Fletcher to Disc Golf in the deep end. [Did any one else notice the matching hair cuts? and drooling? - ed]
A happy TD and ‘Freaky Styley Crater Cup’ winner. Simon Feasey takes out a great win in the last NZ Tour event before leaving with the New Zealand Team to the ‘World Disc Golf Champs’ in Wisconsin, USA.
|
Congratulations Ming Menzies, who takes out the ‘Freaky Styley Crater Cup’ Woman’s Title for the third consecutive year.
All loaded up and heading for home. Matt Falk from the States, course designer Marty de Haas and National Park golfer Des Cooper organise hooking up after Am Worlds and heading up to Highbridge to support the Kiwis playing Pro Worlds...do we hear some words of advice about too much facial hair?
