'The Island 2008'
Proudly sponsored by ‘Fallen Angel’, Stonyridge, Onetangi.
The Fallen Angel and Disc Golf Aotearoa sponsored Waiheke Island Discgolf Championship was played over the weekend.
Top golfers from NZ and overseas competed in the third annual tournament which forms part of the national tour. Playing for the coveted Two Taniwha trophy, they had to first master the exposed and elevated places, navigating the Onetangi Sports Park course new course of 18 holes over 1900m.
The first round had national masters champ Martin de Haas leading on 55, one over par. One shot back
national open champ and current Waiheke champ Simon Feasey, Blair Joines on 58, Waihekeans Siep van Vliet and grand master Paul Cohen together with David Keene making up the top six on 60.
They would not be challenged again by the field, with Sunday's third round again in gusting 30 knot conditions. After 3 rounds Simon would again dominate 2 clear on 167, and extend his margin to 5 after a final 6 holes for the Open championship
Overall second place David, third Siep one shot back, fourth Blair, fifth and Masters champ Martin, with Paul achieving an heroic Grand Master's title, sixth overall.
Local player Jack Hailstone won the junior division, an outstanding effort completing the 54 holes in 246. This just 32 behind dad Paul with a solid display in the hot, often heavy breeze.
