The 2008 Australian Disc Golf Championships
October 25 & 26 @ Newington Armoury
Sydney Olympic Park
Team Manager I. Wozdeer tells the story...
It’s amazing really! With more airlines flying across the Tasman and competition heating up, it’s cheaper to fly to Sydney than to Queenstown, and on top of that you get to score some duty free for your troubles .. nice! It’s a no brainer really, why wouldn’t you duck across the ditch from time to time for a round or two with a great bunch of like minded disc golfers.
Mind you on arrival the boys were a little worried as we had left Auckland in 18 degrees and sunshine and coming into land the Captain informed them they had better buckle up and hang on to their rum and cokes as there was 85kph winds in Sydney, it was raining and the day’s high was 12 degrees. Luckily by the weekend things were back to normal - not a cloud in the sky, a gentle breeze and 30 degrees, that’s the Sydney we know and love.
The Kiwis had organised to stay in the tournament accommodation right at the course at Newington Armoury at Olympic Park. What a good decision that was, bed and breakfast and a great crew. Luke Williams the Sydney Disc Golf Club President made the boys right at home, we were lacking for nothing, so in return Team Kiwi showed their appreciation by cooking a BBQ for every one who stayed on the Friday evening.
Saturday morning saw 37 players registered for the 2008 Australian Nationals, by the sound of things a record number in recent times. There were players there from most States and of course the 3 Kiwis from across the Tasman.
The format for the weekend was 2 rounds of 18 on the Saturday and two consecutive rounds of 12 on the Sunday, followed by a cut to the top 4 in each division for a final round of 9 on the Sunday afternoon.
The course was testing but didn’t drag it all out of you so you could still partake of some night ‘glow golf’ on the Saturday night, thanks to the crew from Victoria, nice skills!
Thanks heaps to everyone who made Team Kiwi very welcome and the 2008 Australian Disc Golf Championships a great event.
