2011 South Island Masters Games Disc Golf Tournament.
Isel Park. Nelson October 15 & 16 | TD Alex Britton
What a disc golf spectacle Q watching his Ultarstar fly lazer like down through the Tunnel.
Two perspectives of the tournament, this first one from by TD Alex Britton
Isel Park played host to its first official DG tournament just recently when the South Island Masters Games came to Nelson.
A field of 21 took part in the one day two round event, including a good contingent of local obsessives, some local newcomers, and a small crowd up from Christchurch. Divisions were split between Ultrastars only, Men’s 30+, Men’s 50+, and Ladies.
Nelson golfers were hoping to make use of a bit of home turf advantage but sadly this was not to be as Pete Crowther from Christchurch and his trusty NZ made Arcturus took out not only the GM division, but also the overall title.
Quentin Gately showed that it’s not all about having a bag with a gazillion discs in it, taking second place overall and first in the Ultrastar section.
Ryan Hunter and Chris Hogan tied for third overall, with Ryan taking first place on the Men’s 30+ division.
Joanna Cranness, playing in her first ever DG tourney took the Ladies title, but was chased well by Sarah Downs and Victoria Fisher who both had strong second rounds.
Those who stuck around for Isel’s DG Gauntlet can bear witness to the extinction of Nelson’s “the sun ALWAYS shines here” myth, as pouring rain partway through followed by an abrupt temperature drop and a hail storm affected the score card ever so slightly! Mark Ryan finished on top by one shot from Jason Smith with Sam Hogg in third.
It was awesome having the guys from Christchurch taking part and also to see so many local newcomers getting to grips with the finer parts of throwing a golf disc in a tree lined course.
See you all next time!
