Spa Park, Taupo.
NZDG Tour event number 6 .. PDGA ‘C Tier’.
Our Tour correspondent Nigel Hailstone tells the story...
Marty de Haas will tell you that it pays to ignore the weather forecasts. With equal measures of true Dutch courage and disdain for atmospheric physics, he makes such bold pronouncements. Marty declared that the severe weather warnings hanging over the weekend could be disregarded. And he was right! Despite the time of year, the 2011 Spa Park round of the national disc golf tour was held in warm conditions with a day of blustery weather followed by a still, picture perfect Sunday.
The lure of this fine course and the central position for the North Island based tour players attracted a turn out of 32 players come Saturday morning. The women’s division fielded six players with the chasing pack becoming ever more threatening to the incumbent champion Ming Menzies.
The Juniors were represented as usual by Toby Gentil and under 17 by Henry Conway. The tournament was to become a pleasant revelation for our tour as Henry announced his top group credentials and more particularly, displayed a controlled and powerful sidearm, the envy of many.
At the top of the men’s competition a Simon-sized hole had appeared with Mr Feasey’s decision to participate in Austria and Norway. Blair Joines turned up to play but then revealed a painfully swollen forearm that rendered him lefty for the tournament providing more opportunities in the top group.
At the end of the first round the blustery conditions had seen no one score par or under, with grandmasters Pete Boyle and Marty de Haas heading the field a shot up on Damian Peters. In fact the top six after round one would go on to be the top six at the end of regular play. Had Brendon Love seen out all three preliminary rounds the Bay of Plenty’s top six representation may have been greater again.
Round two saw more squalls cross the park but the showers were brief and the pumice laden grounds of the central North Island provided superb underfoot conditions. Damian Peters found the form he shows at his home course at Bella Rakha in West Auckland, and set a scorching pace with his 53. Marty bettered his morning round with 55 and Juan Unda threw his name into ring with a fighting 57 which postponed his day two bike riding plans.
As Bob noted next morning there was a ‘clog of Sullivans’ chasing the top six. It was his way of noting that the Levin contingent have not only become a regular feature on the tour but their committment to disc golf was paying dividends with increasingly promising performances. And so Sunday saw a top six looking to hold off the challengers from the Kapiti Coast in glorious sunshine.
Dean Marshall re-confirmed his status in the top echelon of NZ players setting the weekend low score with 51. His score just bettered the excellent 52 of Abraham Hartley and with 54 Jackson Sullivan staked his claim. Their efforts just failed to unseat a top sixer. It was Gemma Sullivan though that had the cat amongst the pigeons. Her fearless putt and steady fairway play had lead the tournament until feeling the pain on the unforgiving bank of hole four. Ming Menzies come over the top with a one shot win in the Women’s division.
Super six play was conducted with Dean one shot back from Damian and hoping to retain his morning’s form. It was not to be, with Dean finding trouble in the blackberry rough on the first hole, then crashing from obstacle to obstacle on the final hole to be beaten by three in second. The steady game of grand master Bob saw him share fourth with Henry Conway, in third the delighted Marty.
Congratulations to the winners, Damian in Open, Ming in Womens, Dean in Masters, Marty in Grand Masters, and Toby and Henry in Juniors divisions. And thanks to those that make it all possible with their efforts for our sport. Once again we gathered for laughs, a battle and a ‘walk made better’.

What a Course - Every hole on this great course has something different to offer. Here on the majestic yet challenging 8th, Abe Hartley (Levin) drives down the long narrowing fairway in the hope of a birdie. Also in shot is Toby Gentil (Auckland), left, looking the giant he is becoming in this sport.
It's in the Gentil Genes - Showing that awesomely accurate Gentil putting technique we've seen for over 30 years from the Grand Master Bob Gentil and multl-National Champ Sheree, son Toby Gentil (Birkenhead) was threatening the chains from big distances yet staying close should he miss. A lesson for the layup Queens in his group for this 3rd round. Watch out for a video lesson on this great technique soon on www.discgolf.co.nz.

Makaripi - The Spa Park Disc Golf Course sits alongside the start of the mighty Waikato River with steaming hotpools at the 9th tee just perfect for those tired legs.
Fly My Pretty - Tauranga Disc Golfer Dean Marshall over shoots the par 4 5th and has a putt back up the incline for a birdie. [Note Auckland Golfer Nigel Hailstone in the blackberry backdrop. Not pretty!]
Dean Leans like a Mean Clean Throwing Machine - Dean Marshall sends his drive down the 62m ‘short and sweet’ hole 17 on the Saturday afternoon.
|
Flowing Waters - That's what Waikato means (thanks to Waikato Beer and their trivea bottle tops!). And Dean Marshall was flowing with a mighty weekend's best 51 in round three.
That's a Gemma of a Shot - Levin’s Gemma Sullivan on the 10th tee watched by Riki Elston, Bro Jackson, Mum & caddy Jill and Nigel Hailstone. In the background the wind-felled Gum tree caused some problems on the 8th.
Top Levin Performer - Abraham Hartley, another of the Levin rent-a-crowd has a run at basket #1 watched by Wellington’s Sam Burk and Birkenhead’s Toby Gentil.
|
NZ Champ on the way! - Bay of Plenty J16 golfer Henry Conway [Ming’s son] on his way to making the top group and the ‘Super 6’ for the first time. And the top line status did not phase HC one bit, that's top level sportamnship for you.
Hole #10 was tough for the women (and Marty - ed.) - The course designers figured using the elevated tee was better than shortening the hole and making it all up hill. Gemma Sullivan gives it her all in an all-Levin photo. |
Ballsy Shot - Hole #2 didn’t play as easy as in the past. Here Levin’s AB has a scary down-hill run at the basket but flights it chain high, yeah!.
Autumn Magic - Ultimate player Sam Burke (Wellington) often makes the trip to the Taupo Classic to enjoy the fabulous course. Decked out in tights he sends his second up to the basket of the tricky 16th.
Dutchie Style. One Tree Hill golfer Martin de Haas takes an unsuccessful birdie-run at basket #3, watched by Junior Henry Conway and caddy Rachel. |
The brains behind the operation. Numbers expert Toby Gentil checks and sorts the cards on the Saturday evening. Nice work buddy. Devious deceptor M de Haas was able to confirm The Tobe was unable to be influenced by bribes of sweets, money or threats.
Way to Go - Landing amoungst the roots of a recently downed tree did not deter Toby Gentil (Birkenhead) from playing his shot on the 1st. Way to go - especially when you consider he is a leftie and is here forearming with the right!.
The blackberry bunker on hole #6 caused a few problems over the weekend. Tauranga junior Henry Conway lucky to be able to get his foot on the mark to avoid the penalty drop zone. |
Leaping Lizard - More ‘Marty Style’ from reptilian look-alike and Freaky Slyliest Marty de Haas as Henry Conway, Pete Boyle and Dean Marshall look on. |
Yet more ‘Marty style’ (do those 2 words work together in a sentance? - ed.)- The round the corner hole 12 saw numerous birdies over the weekend. This was ‘not’ one of them.
Twig the Sprig - With winter setting in, footwear choice can make the difference. Toby Gentil (Birkenhead) was taking no chances, electing to don his footie boots.
The Course Just Gets Better - A weekend in Taupo would not be complete without a mountainbike ride. Or three, as Marty de Haas enjoyed just like at the 2010 event. See further evidence of the storm that downed many trees a month prior. Top female golfer Karoline 'Ramjet' Jönsson (Papamoa) climbs in the background.
|
Timber! … The big Eucalyptus blown over on the left-hand approach to the signature hole 8 played like a magnet. West Auckland’s Damian Peters tries to slot his up-shot through the branches.
Boyling Point - Pete Boyle (Taumaunui) in the Super 6 playoff before departing for home and a game of basketball as he so often does post disc golf tournament. This sign needs to say "18 Hole Basketed Disc Golf Course" - write to your local counciller Taupoians!.
|
Appreciative gallery - A round of applause as the ‘Super 6’ send some impressive drives around the corner to hole 12.
Cool Head - Glen Eden Disc Golfer Damian Peters shows the advantages of having an 18 basket course outside his back door. |
Rooted - Final hole of the Super Six and Dean Marshall in trouble, trying now to just defend his one shot lead for second place from Marty de Haas.
And the winners were - Henry Conway J16, Ming Menzies Woman’s, Toby Gentil J14, Dean Marshall Masters, Damian Peters Open and Marty de Haas Grand Masters. Congratulations! |
"Dos frisbess es todo lo que necesito" - Once again Mexican Wonderboy Juan Unda completed the entire 3 rounds with just two discs, including a dazzling one over 57 in round 2. His putting style was true to his motto "I don't do threes".
Love Doubles - Enjoying the Super 6 from a comfortable position were players Jackson Sullivan (Levin) and Paula Wilson (Foxton Beach), comparing notes from 3 great rounds of the beautiful Spa Park Disc Golf Course. |
