Harcourt Park, Upper Hutt August 25 & 26
Join The Brotherhood
When contemplating attending a Disc Golf event or anything for that matter in Wellington, it’s always good to keep an eye on the weather map as the time approaches, so I did. A big ‘H’ was coming over the Tasman as I counted the days down prior to our flight south, things were looking good, but I figured I should take a thermal and my wet weather gear just in case.
Last time I played at the beautiful Upper Hutt Harcourt Park course the southerly wind created havoc but to my delight this year was a whole different story, a little chilly maybe but otherwise ideal relatively calm days. Another pat on the back for Tour schedulers putting events on the new moon!
I was chuffed to hear that the ‘Levin Disc Golf Brotherhood’ had agreed to take on the running of this event as word had it that it was close to being dropped from the NZDG tour again. Harcourt Park is not only beautiful but it’s a great well designed course with permanent baskets so well and truly deserves to have a well run event on it at least once a year. Congratulations to the Levin crew for stepping up to the tee and not just making this happen but making it happen really, really well.
It was great to see 34 players turn up Saturday morning including a large contingent of locals who have been giving the course some ‘love’ over the past months. They had contacted the local council and got permission (at their own cost) to improve the muddy Tees by digging them out and putting in gravel and lime tee pads which was a great improvement, well done guys.
From the end of round one it became obvious that the rest of the weekend was going to be about trying to catch the skilful side arm magic of the Taumarunui wizard Pete Boyle. Rumour has it they are testing his second sample as we write, how can a 58 year old whip us they way he did?
As the renowned Mangere Mexican commented;
“In my home village he is known as Pedro en el Ritmo– On the Beat Pete. To see this artisan of disc golf play a perfect Harcourt sub fifty in the second round was worthy of the 214 peso entry fee. Some marvel at the fact a Grand Master could win with all those young amigos out for glory and indeed Mr Boyle is a fine specimen of a man who looks after his body and stays cooler under pressure than a tequila by the pool.
But for me what was most notable was Pedro’s attitude. Playing for the win like it was another day at the park, just pleased to be tossing a Frisbee with his fellow sportsmen, he deserves recognition not only for those near faultless 174 shots but for having such a great attitude. Pedro saludo – el leyenda!
Salud,
Juan Unda”
The ‘Super 6’ became the ‘Super 8’ with 3 players tied for 6th after the Sunday morning round.
When the dust settled Pete had taken the Grand Masters and the Fault Line Fury Title over-all, Levin’s Lawton Williams was our Open Champ, Blair Joines the Masters and Ming Menzies the Woman’s.
Congratulations to everyone who made this event “sweet as bro!”
